March Maintenance: Home Security

GENERAL HOME SECURITY TIPS

Home security should be maintained and updated in order to keep up with the advancing technology that criminals can use to gain access to your house. Follow the tips below to keep your security system maintained and your home protected.

NEVER NEGLECT TO LOCK UP YOUR HOME

Always lock your doors when you leave your house. It doesn’t matter if you’re leaving for five minutes or five days – you never know who might be casing your home, waiting for you to leave. Locking your doors and windows ensures you won’t be an easy target for would-be intruders.

REKEY YOUR LOCKS WHEN MOVING INTO A NEW HOME

Rekey your locks as soon as you move into a new home. You never know who may have extra keys to an old lock, and it’s much cheaper to rekey a lock than change it out completely. That way, you’ll know exactly who has access to your home.

DON’T MAKE IT OBVIOUS YOU’RE NOT HOME

When you leave your home for a few days or longer, make sure that it still looks occupied. Would-be burglars check to see if your mail has built up, if your lights are on or if people are entering or exiting the home on a regular basis. As a neighbor to grab your mail and check on your home while you’re gone, and put your lights on a timer if possible to illuminate your home at night.

INSTALL AN ALARM SYSTEM

Alarm systems are among the very best forms of home protection and are an excellent way to deter intruders. Just seeing a sign or sticker that indicates a home is alarmed is often enough to send would-be burglars packing. If someone does try to get into your home, they will be startled by a blaring alarm sound which will alert others in the area that something is amiss. In most cases (depending on the alarm system you get), the alarm company will be notified and they will call the police if a pre-arranged set of steps are not followed to give them the all clear.
