TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR HOME SAFE DURING A POWER OUTAGE

TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR HOME SAFE DURING A POWER OUTAGE

As the saying goes – “You don’t know what you have until it’s gone.” This is true – especially when it comes to your electricity! One of the biggest inconveniences to a homeowner is a power outage. People often don’t consider how crucial electricity is for the simplest things – like opening your garage door, for instance. In that light, we thought we would share a few tips we’ve learned for getting through these annoying experiences.

BE PREPARED

Some of our preparedness tips for getting through a power outage include the following:

Be sure to have flashlights in a convenient and memorable location. You don’t want to be caught off-guard and have to stumble around in the dark looking for things.

Double-check your garage door. Garage doors run on electricity, so when the power goes out, the normal opening method is ineffective. Many of these electric garage doors have a backup method in case of a situation like a power outage, but you need to try it beforehand to make sure that it actually works. There have been plenty of situations where a homeowner has taken this feature for granted and when the power goes out, the garage can’t open through any method.

Make sure that you have alternative chargers for your important devices, such as your phone and laptop. Car chargers are incredibly useful during power outages.

Try to stay out of the refrigerator and freezer as much as you can when the power goes out. Every time you open one of these doors, the cold air will escape. If the power outage is lengthy, your food may begin to spoil.

Consider investing in a back-up generator that will allow you to keep important appliances such as refrigerators and freezers running.

WE’LL KEEP YOU SAFE

In stressful situations like these, we tend to become preoccupied and distracted. You’ll be thinking about the power coming back on, where your flashlights are if your phone is charged, and so much more. While you’ll be thinking about that, a burglar will be thinking that this is the perfect opportunity to rob a house. Because of the power outage, some security systems may be down, making this an opportune time for a robbery. By investing in our residential locksmith services, you’ll be able to keep your house safe even in the case of an emergency.
